Additional Details

Charles H. Lewis (1837-1925) was the son of Newburyport mariner John Lewis, a native of Portugal. This notebook contains the usual mathematical problems and transcribed poems, but often titled in multi-colored calligraphy. Two full-page drawings of ships are complemented by smaller insets of fish, patriotic motifs, and maritime scenes. It should be no surprise that Lewis was off to sea as a mariner by 1855; he lived in Newburyport for the rest of his life, working factory and janitorial jobs. He apparently never pursued his artistic inclinations any further.
