(MARITIME.) Stoy, Daniel. Protest by a Philadelphia merchant ship captain against his treatment by Spanish privateers. Autograph Document Signed, 3 pages plus Spanish translator's note, 12 x 7 1/2 inches, on one sheet; minor wear and soiling. Santiago, Cuba, 24 August 1793

Additional Details

Sailing home from Port-au-Prince, Stoy's schooner Isabella was boarded by a British privateer searching for French property. A mere three hours later, the ship was then re-captured by a Spanish privateer. The Spanish captain "would not admit me to say one word but drove me into the hole like a dog." The ship was looted, and Captain Stoy and his crew were brought in chains to Cuba (along with the British boarding party), where Stoy filed this formal protest.
