Additional Details

Samuel Wiatt (born circa 1844) was a passenger aboard the ship Margaret Deane, en route to Bahia to visit his merchant brother. This engaging account of his journey unfortunately stops short of his arrival in Brazil. Apparently the only other passengers on this vessel were three young sisters of the Nicolay family: Albinia, Elizabeth, and Mary Ann, whose father Charles was chaplain of the English church in Bahia. Mary Ann Nicolay (1850-1939), who Wiatt describes at length here, later became a protégé of Florence Nightingale and a noted nurse in Australia.
