Additional Details

This eye-catching work of art was produced for the radical National Maritime Union of America, which joined the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1938. Featuring painted American and Brazilian flags and ship's wheel, a photograph of President Roosevelt, and a black overlay over an iridescent silver-blue background of what appear to be actual butterfly wings. The text reads "Rio de Janeiro, North America, South America, Atlantic, Gulf, Great Lakes, C.I.O., N.M.U. of A.," and the framer's tag is from Brazil, but to our knowledge the NMUA never had operations in Brazil. This rather mysterious piece is definitely one of a kind.
