Additional Details

This photograph was taken during Dr King's only visit to Fort Worth. He is shown outdoors with two members of the welcoming committee, possibly at the airport. That evening, King delivered a talk titled "A Great Time to Be Alive" at the city's Majestic Theater. An historical marker states that 400 people showed up to hear him speak, despite bomb threats. It was the first time the theater opened the doors for its lower seats to Black visitors.

Calvin Littlejohn (1909-1993) was a Black photographer in Fort Worth, TX. The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas holds an enormous archive of his prints and negatives, and a book of his work was published in 2009.
