(MARTIN LUTHER KING.) Endorsement handbill for presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy in the tragic California primary. Double-sided handbill, 9 1/2 x 4 inches; minimal wear. San Francisco, CA: McCarthy for President Campaign, 4 June [1968]

Additional Details

This flier was issued in support of Minnesota liberal Eugene McCarthy's quest for the Democratic nomination in the 1968 presidential campaign. Along with the portraits and names of 20 local Black leaders who sought selection as McCarthy delegates, it features the portrait and endorsement of Martin Luther King, given in March 1968 when McCarthy was the only liberal alternative to incumbent president Lyndon Baines Johnson. Much changed in the intervening months: Johnson dropped out of the race, King was assassinated, and Robert F. Kennedy and Vice President Hubert Humphrey joined the race. The 4 June California primary was viewed as pivotal. Kennedy beat McCarthy by a narrow margin, but was assassinated shortly after midnight. Humphrey eventually won the nomination but lost to Nixon in the general election.
