Additional Details

This rally drew an estimated 57,000 attendees to Soldier Field. The program shows James Farmer, Whitney Young, James Forman, Roy Wilkins, and Mahalia Jackson in addition to the keynote address by King.

Also included are long lists of local "Rally Officers" and sponsoring organizations. The city's Catholic and Jewish leadership were active participants. A pledge form commits attendees to "work for civil rights and human dignity for all Americans." A full-page "Pledge of Action for Civil Rights" urges attendees to work for the enforcement of new civil rights legislation, and the support of the Mississippi Freedom Summer efforts for voting rights.

If the date sounds familiar, this rally was held on the same day that three CORE Freedom Summer workers were murdered in Mississippi.
