Additional Details

In 1826, the Massachusetts Scientific Library Association was formed to create a specialized library of science books. Dozens of subscribers committed to the project, but not enough to open a new facility. The subscription list was soon turned over to the existing Boston Athenaeum, which collected funds from most of the subscribers in hopes of expanding their scientific holdings. This list shows all of the original subscribers, most of whom followed through on their original subscriptions or proprietorships ranging from $5 to $100. A few withdrew their names, while others such as Daniel Webster and Edward Everett were listed simply as "not collected."
