Pemberton Square was a private mixed-use development built in Boston in 1835. In its heyday, it housed numerous government and institutional offices, as well as upscale private residences. The Government Center complex was built on the site in the 1960s.
These are the papers of Benjamin Adams (1781-1858) as a Pemberton Square warden and proprietor. Adams was a prosperous Boston merchant, although not closely related to the presidential Adams family, and was responsible for arranging all maintenance in the development. His records include lists of residents and proprietors, signed petitions, meeting minutes, memoranda, and maintenance bills.
