Additional Details

Bound after the 31 March 1812 issue is a defective broadside titled "Gerry-Mander: or, Essex South District formed into a Monster!!" It features a map of Newburyport's new congressional district in the form of a monstrous salamander. The word "gerrymander" and image had first appeared in the Boston Gazette of 26 March; this is believed to be the first printed appearance of either outside of Boston. The 26 June 1812 issue contains President Madison's declaration of war; it is only moderately worn. The run is nearly complete, with 13 issues either missing or mostly torn out, though nothing appears to be excised.
