Additional Details

Alexander Holmes (1803-1869) was a shipping merchant in Kingston, MA, just north of Plymouth. This daybook mostly lists retail sales of flour, sugar and other staples made from his store. However, numerous entries also describe the outfitting of his ships, such as the schooner Bridgewater, the bark Truman, and the bark Messenger Bird. The first page includes an inventory of Holmes's extensive railroad bond holdings, while the penultimate leaf has a list of 17 ships and owners titled "Account of fleeters sold." Holmes was also president of the Old Colony & Fall River Railroad, which is referenced in the daybook.
