Additional Details

Boston Latin School was founded in 1635 as America's first public school. It was funded largely by bequests and leases such as this. Here, William Colborne and James Penn agree, on behalf of their townsmen, to lease a parcel of land to John Shaw and his heirs for a period of 78 years, with the proceeds used to help fund the school.
