Additional Details

The steamship City of Columbus wrecked on a reef off Gay Head in January 1884, with the loss of more than a hundred passengers and crew. 29 men survived by clinging to the rigging of the partially submerged ship. It was one of the most horrific maritime disasters of its era. This broadside offers a "Grand Excursion to Gay Head (the Scene of the City of Columbus Disaster) and a Visit to the West End of Martha's Vineyard." Disaster tourists from Boston and points south were offered the opportunity to view the wreck from the steamer Monohanset and spend a pleasant three hours at Gay Head before returning home.
