Frontispiece etching by Matta, 210x120 mm; 8 1/4x4 3/4 inches, signed and numbered 42/60 in pencil, lower margins. 8vo, specially bound by Gerard Charrière in black morocco with panels of green and brown calf and gold leaf turned in the shape of mainland Greece worked in dotted pointelle; a circle of black leather ornamented with straight pins fixed in red wax represents Athens; 1/4 calf chemise and marbled board slipcase, some moderate wear; book and contents bright and clean. number 42 of only 60 copies with the matta print from a total edition of 560. A lovely French translation of this important Greek Marxist poem written during the Greek civil war, 1945-47. Swiss born Charrière studied bookbinding at the École des Arts et Métiers in Basel, the École Estienne in Paris, and the Art Students League in New York.
