With an embossed stamp crediting Holmes, 289 Broadway on the mat; in a leather case. Circa 1850

WITH--Mathew Brady/E & H.T. Anthony. Carte-de-visite of Dr. Valentine Mott. Albumen print, the image measuring 3 1/4x2 1/8 inches (8.3x5.5 cm.), the mount 4x2 3/8 inches (10.2x6 cm.), with Mott's name, in pencil, in an unknown hand, on verso.

Dr. Valentine Mott graduated from Columbia College, and was soon appointed Professor of Surgery. A highly-regarded medical pioneer, he performed 1000 amputations and 165 lithotomies (removal of stones from inside organs). In 1841 he was a founding faculty member of University Medical College, which is now N.Y.U. School of Medicine.
