Additional Details

first edition. The second medical work to be published in frontier Kentucky. Carter was writing for a female audience, and delivered his home medical advice with a dose of moralism, such as this nugget: "Love indulged without success, sometimes produces hyperchondriacal affections, hystericks, fevers and death" (page xviii). The medical advice consists mostly of folk remedies: "To stop vomiting, beat red onions and apply to the groins and pit of stomach" (page 127). Nineteen pages are devoted to midwifery. Carter concludes with some advice on the zodiac ("Taurus is evil for bleeding"), three poems, a glossary, and an index.
"Dr. Carter was the son of an educated English physician and a half-breed Indian mother. He came west by way of Maryland and South Carolina and settled in Garrard County, Kentucky, where he later began his practice. His study was largely with the Indians"--Kentucky Imprints 537.
