". . . The only thing I can say upon it yet it obstinately refuses purging . . . the strongest cathartick will make but little alteration in the stool, either as to their frequency or the quality of the matter evacuated. My method has been this, first to give an emetic . . . on the intermediate day a purge; I have tried rhubarb . . . I frequently order clyster of mutton broath or a decoction of the large male cows . . . As to balsamicks I find no great benefit from them . . ."
