" . . . I had an infant here with some fine vaccine pustules in its arms which it was my intention to have shown him. The enclos'd matter is taken from one of these Pustules and if used according to the directions sent, I doubt not of its succeeding, but it must be observed that altho the matter when dried sometimes (indeed not infrequently) fails to infect, yet this is hardly ever the case, when it is inserted from arm to arm in its fresh and fluid state . . ."
