Additional Details

First edition of what is widely cited as the first medical book published west of the Mississippi. John Sappington (1776-1856) was a pioneer in the American use of quinine to treat malaria; he imported cinchona bark from Peru and used it to manufacture "Dr. Sappington's Anti-Fever Pills," an unusually effective patent medicine. This book was printed in his hometown of Arrow Rock in central Missouri, and is an early Missouri imprint. The book was copyrighted in 1843, but this is the only known early edition. Sabin 76909.
