Joseph Willis Houston (1834-1920) of Lancaster, PA was an 1857 graduate of Philadelphia's Jefferson Medical College (now Thomas Jefferson University) who went on to serve as an assistant surgeon in the Civil War and dean of the medical school at the historically black Lincoln University. This collection includes his matriculation card signed by each of his 7 professors, including surgery instructor Samuel D. Gross of Gross Clinic fame, practice of medicine instructor John Kearsley Mitchell, chemistry instructor Franklin Bache (great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin); obstetrics instructor Charles Delucena Meigs; Dean Robley Dunglison; anatomy instructor Joseph Pancoast; and Robert M. Huston. It also includes printed tickets to six of the lecture courses, some of them signed by professors such as Bache (two), Mitchell, and Dunglison; an examination ticket; an attending privileges card for Pennsylvania Hospital; and three personal invitation cards issued to Houston by his instructors.
