Additional Details

Edwin Donerson Moten and his wife moved to Quakertown, Texas from Indianapolis around the turn of the century. Quakertown was one of a number of pioneer black communities established in the west after Reconstruction. White residents in the area soon became resentful of the resourcefulness and rapid progress of Quakertown and began to legislate a type of "urban renewal," forcing many blacks to either relocate outside of town or to simply move away. Such was the case with the Motens, who returned to Indianapolis. By 1923, all traces of Quakertown's once vibrant community had been virtually erased. The present archive gives an interesting view of Moten's life both in Texas and Indiana.
