Additional Details

James Olland McCorison (1851-1923) of North Berwick, ME was a member of the Class of 1878 with the Medical School of Maine at Bowdoin College. The bulk of the collection consists of 21 of his medical school notebooks from 1874 to 1878. A couple of them include colored pencil drawings. A wallet contains 27 attendance and matriculation cards documenting his coursework, along with 3 receipts for payment for these "Medical Tickets."

Two notebooks were kept during McCorison's medical practice in North Berwick. An undated "private prescription book" notes the medicines given to 88 patients (only 3 of them named). For a physician, his handwriting is fairly strong, so we can make out many of the ingredients, such as tincture of belladonna, essence of peppermint, and chloric ether. Another volume consists mostly of recipes for various medicines, with two pages of patient payment records from 1883. 4 additional volumes consist of compiled medical recipes compiled by McCorison and older doctors going back to 1853. Finally, the collection contains a cabinet card and carte-de-visite of Dr. McCorison.
