Additional Details

The title-margin text explains this complex allegory, with the dark central figure of Death resting upon the corpse of a youth stricken down in the vigor of health. The Reaper is attended on the right by agents of war, conflagration, famine and pestilence. At left are intemperance, pleasure, remorse, suicide, despair, fever, apoplexy, etc. Old Age approaches Death undaunted, firmly supported by a figure symbolizing his Christian faith. Marzio, The Democratic Art, plate 47.
