Small 8vo, contemporary vellum; quite defective, 15 disbound leaves supplied from another taller and crudely trimmed copy, lacking 34 other leaves (*1-8, A7, A8, I-1, I8, Q1, S8, AA8, EE1, EE8, and final 17 leaves) including title page (supplied in facsimile), several early mends of torn or missing corners, a few early annotations, worm holes affecting text in first part of volume, tightly trimmed to 5 3/8 inches grazing some text; 2 inked J.F. A catechism and dictionary of the Tarascan or Purhépecha language, which was spoken in the Michoacán region of southwest Mexico. "A volume of extreme rarity"--Sabin 38627. We find no other copies at auction since 1901, and can trace only 4 library copies, only one of them purporting to be complete. JCB I:253; Medina, Mexico 68; Palau 130091; Pilling 245 (describes this copy as "the only copy of this work seen by me"). Provenance: José Fernando Ramirez (1804-1871); Puttick Ramirez sale, July 1880, lot 837 to Hubert Howe Bancroft; to John Carter Brown Library by 1912 (2 copies noted in Medina); deaccessioned in 2008.
