Small folio, contemporary vellum, worn with damage to edges and lacking top of backstrip; endpapers renewed, lacking front free endpaper, title page defective (lacking lower outer 25% and patched with an early scrap of paper including a hand-colored manuscript drawing of a ship on verso), lacking second preliminary leaf, the following leaf defective with loss of perhaps 5% of text, moderate dampstaining, early manuscript check marks and underlining, minor worming, tightly trimmed with loss of entire imprint at base of second title page and a few headlines cropped, marginal vermin damage to last 5 leaves; early ownership inscriptions on first and final leaves. Additional Details

Second and expanded edition of the first dictionary printed in the Americas. It begins with a Spanish-to-Nahuatl dictionary (originally published in 1555), followed by the Nahuatl-to-Spanish dictionary (here making its first appearance). The illustrations include a nearly full-page coat of arms on the first title, a nearly full-page engraving of Saint Francis on the second title page, an engraving of a kneeling man at the end of Volume I, a full-page IHS holy name insignia at the end of Volume II, and smaller tailpieces at the end of each volume, in addition to the decorative initials which begin each section of the dictionary.
