first edition of an early work by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695), the great Mexican poetess. It consists of Christmas carols to be sung in honor of the 13th-century saint Pedro Nolasco. On page 7 is a humorous section headed 'Tocotin,' meant to evoke the style of the traditional Nahua dance, including some words in Nahuatl. It is sung by a boastful Indian dancer playing an out-of-tune guitar, who professes such a deep veneration for the saint that he would slay an army of Moorish enemies single-handedly. Published anonymously, the poem next appeared among her collected works in 1689. Not in Medina, Mexico; see Obras completas de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, page II:32. Interest in Sor Juana's work remains strong over the centuries; a collection of her works was recognized by UNESCO in March 2019.
