Additional Details

first edition of the life of Saint Philip of Jesus, a Mexican who was one of 26 Franciscan missionaries crucified in Japan in 1597. The plate, depicting the crucified Philip pierced with two spears, is not found in most copies. Medina, Mexico 1287 (does not call for a plate, but suspects that one was issued); Palau 159375; this edition not in Sabin. 4 copies in OCLC. We have traced only one other copy at auction with the plate, at a Swann sale, 13 December 1956, lot 224.
