(MEXICAN MANUSCRIPTS.) Cortés y Zúñiga, Martin. Order by the son of Hernán Cortés to provide maize to a loyal subject. Document Signed as "Yo el Marqués," with receipt on verso signed by Diego de Vega. 2 pages, 6 x 8 1/2 inches, minor wear. Mexico, 24 April 1565

Additional Details

This order was issued by Martin Cortés y Zúñiga (1532-1589), who had succeeded his father Hernán Cortés as Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca. Writing from Mexico City, don Martín instructs his accountant, Bernardino de Otálora, to give 30 bushels of maize from his estate to the alguacil of Toluca, Diego de Vega (likely an Indian), as a reward for Vega's assistance in weighing the tribute owed to don Martín and delivering it to Mexico City. Vega responded on verso, acknowledging the receipt of the maize. Accompanied by a typed transcript and translation.
