Additional Details

A colonial matrimony ledger recording the marriages of Indians of San Juan Teotihuacán near Mexico City, which is today a famous archaeological site. Written in an elegant script by Fr. Juan de Villaseñor y Monrroy, who officiated the marriages listed in the document and whose signature appears throughout. Each entry lists the names and origins of the bride and groom, as well as that of their witnesses, along with other information, such as the couple's suitability for Christian marriage. In nearly all the recorded cases, neither the bride or groom was able to sign, so Villaseñor signed in their stead. A few of the entries are blank or half-finished, suggesting that the marriage had been called off at the last minute.
