(MEXICAN MANUSCRIPTS.) Revillagigedo, Juan, Conde de. Early manuscript copy of his famous "Instruccion reservada . . . su succesor." [538] manuscript pages. Folio, later vellum; dampstaining, with water damage and slight loss to last few leaves; uncut. Mexico, 30 June 1794

Additional Details

Upon leaving office as Viceroy of New Spain, the Conde de Revillagigedo left these extensive detailed instructions to his successor. Although they were not published until 1831, they apparently circulated in manuscript form as a thoughtful snapshot of New Spain in the late colonial period. The present manuscript copy is written in at least two different scribal hands. It was likely done before the 1831 publication as it does not include any introductory material, and differs in many very minor points of punctuation and spelling. However, it follows the same format, divided into no less than 1,422 sections and concluding with the same dateline. Includes substantial material on what later became Texas, California, Oregon, and Alaska.
