Additional Details

"Viva el amor de Gregorita Vazques" ("Long live the love of Gregorita Vazquez") was written by an anonymous suitor, announcing his true feelings for Gregorita and pleading with her to realize how perfect their match would be. He vows to appreciate her and not simply "take pleasure in" her: "How long beautiful girl / Will you hurt for a fine lover / Who will not leave you in an instant / Who values you but does not only take pleasure in you." While we do not know if the courtship was successful, this charming and apparently unpublished piece encapsulates attitudes in late colonial Mexico regarding courtship, romance, and desire. It is colorfully illustrated with a bird perched on the branch of a fruit tree.
