Additional Details

A Spanish-language translation of President Polk's 7 December 1847 State of the Union Address to Congress. It was possibly printed at General Scott's headquarters after the occupation of Mexico City. The address treats the war at length, arguing that "though the United States were the aggrieved nation, Mexico commenced the war," and boasting of "the rapid and brilliant successes of our arms and the vast extent of the enemy's territory." It insists that "the only means by which [Mexico] can reimburse the United States for the expenses of the war is a cession to the United States of a portion of her territory." None traced in OCLC or at auction.
