Partially printed document signed, 2 pages on one leaf, 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, plus integral blank, both leaves completed in manuscript; uncut, stitch holes on inner margin, minor wear. Mexico, printed before 2 May 1572

A printed carta de poder (power of attorney) form. This exact form is not recorded in Szewczyk's "39 Books and Broadsides Printed in America before the Bay Psalm Book," but is very similar to his #7 through #11, printed circa 1568-69 by Mexico's second printer, Antonio de Espinosa (who died in 1576). Both earlier and later examples have an initial line of printed text reading "Sepan quantos. . . ," usually beginning with a decorative engraved "S." The present example leaves the first four inches of the text block blank, and starts with "para que por mi y en mi nombre. . . ." It has 26 printed lines on the first page, ending in ". . . para que podays en mi," with 30 lines on verso. This example was completed in Merida, Yucatan on 2 May 1572 for Andrea del Castillo.
