A dramatic depiction of the Battle of Antón Lizardo in Mexico's Reform War. Admiral Marin, who commanded the two steamers, had defected from the Mexican Navy in support of conservative rebels, and had been declared a pirate by the ruling liberal government. This left them open to attack by foreign navies. On 6 March 1860, they were defeated by the USS Saratoga just off Mexico. The prisoners were turned over to the Mexican government, and the steamer Marquis de la Havana taken as a prize. It soon entered service in the Confederate Navy as the CSS McRae. We trace no copies of this print at auction since 1904.
