Additional Details

This decree alludes to the possibility of an interoceanic canal at Tehuantepec, suggesting (in translation) that "a settlement is formed in the center of the Isthmus at the location the Government designates as most suitable for taking advantage of navigation to the Gulf of Mexico via the Coazacoalcos River, and for convenient transportation by road to the nearest port on the South Sea." Panama eventually was chosen as the better canal route, but a transoceanic rail line now takes advantage of the geography. One traced in OCLC (University of Texas, San Antonio) and none at auction.
