Additional Details

Oaxaca regained its autonomous statehood at the outset of the Mexican-American War, and was governed by a triumvirate which included a little-known Zapotec lawyer named Benito Juárez. He later served as the first Indigenous president of Mexico. Included here are:

Manuscript document on Department of Oaxaca letterhead, 2 pages, signed by Luís Fernandez del Campo, José Arteaga, and Benito Juarez; defective on bottom edge with loss of several words. The document by which the triumvirate assumes control of Oaxaca (in translation): "Appointed to constitute the executive power of this Department . . . today we have taken the oath prescribed by it. As we assume the duties of such delicate and honorable functions, we are satisfied to inform Your Excellency, offering you our humble services and personal." Oaxaca, 11 August 1846.

Printed broadside decree signed in type by the triumvirate and Secretary Manuel Ruiz; toning at lower edge. Acknowledges the act of the Oaxaca legislature of 9 August forming the new government. Oaxaca, 13 August 1846.

"Acta levantada por la guarnicion y el pueblo oaxaqueño, proclamando la reorganizacion de la Republica y la defensa de la independencia nacional." Printed broadsheet, 2 pages on one sheet; folds, some underlining in colored ink. An act of the new Oaxaca legislature, forming the new state government and urging unity in the face of the American invasion. Lists the members of the legislature and other officials including Juarez. Oaxaca: Ignacio Rincon, 9 August 1846.

"Acta del Cuerpo de Plana mayor de esta plaza, adhiriéndose al plan proclamado por la guarnicion y el pueblo oaxaqueño, el dia 9 del mes actual." Printed broadside. Military officials express support for the new Oaxaca government. Oaxaca: Ignacio Rincon, 1846.

Letterpress broadside, signed in type by Juan Diaz as army colonel and Joaquin Romero. Colonel Diaz proclaims the new Oaxaca leadership to the public, including Juarez. Oaxaca, 11 August 1846.
