Additional Details

The Rev. Samuel Grafton Kilgore (1858-1924) and his wife Cassie Chase Kilgore were Methodist missionaries to Mexico in the 1880s and early 1890s. They settled in New Mexico circa 1905. This collection includes his account book for the Durango Mission, 1892-3; letters he received from Chihuahua in 1888 and 1907; and 8 letters he received from the Board of Missions in Nashville, TN, 1890-94. Among the other family papers are 28 family letters circa 1907-15, mostly from daughter Juanita; 12 early family photographs, mostly of relatives back east; papers of their daughter Catherine Johnston's family in New Mexico, 1936-44; and printed matter from the Women's Christian Temperance Union and other temperance groups, some in Spanish, 1926-30 and undated. Perhaps most interesting is a long missionary letter from Mary Kelso in Singapore, 8 November 1894.
