Additional Details

Linières was commander of the 51st Battalion with the French intervention in support of Emperor Maximilian. During his free time, he drew quite accomplished scenes of the Mexican landscape, some of them dated 1863 through 1866. This volume includes photographic reproductions of 50 of these views. Most of the views are pastoral landscapes from the Sierra Madre, Orizaba, Chapultepec, and elsewhere, with a few town scenes of Lagos and Guanajuato. One view depicts a tent encampment at Buenavista. The views are preceded by a portrait of Linières and followed by a collage portrait of French officers and officials. Linières succumbed to disease in January 1867, shortly before Maximilian's government collapsed. Palau 321024. Only one other copy known at auction, and only 2 copies listed in WorldCat.
