Juan de Mata Roura served as United States consul at Laguna, Yucatán--then an independent republic. With the outbreak of war, he was imprisoned in Mérida on charges relating to an American citizen accused of theft. He appealed to the captain of the USS Somers, stationed nearby on blockade duty, but they were unable to help him. None traced in OCLC or at auction.
