Cristóbal de Gurrola, a Yaqui Indian leader who was allied with the Jesuits, was infamous for abusing his position as Captain General. Here is a long and irate letter to Gurrola from the the alcalde of Ostimuri in Sonora. The alcalde complains that Gurrola has brought in vagabonds from other provinces with unfulfilled promises that they would be sent to fight in California. He orders two men to be apprehended dead or alive, and others to be sent to the mines. For more on Gurrola, see Folsom, Yaquis and the Empire, pages 129-169.
