Additional Details

This odd volume has a title page in French "La curiosite, la plaisir le pays de Jalisco, Xuadalaxara, 1819" ("The curiosities and pleasures of the country near Guadalajara in Jalisco, 1819"). It is not entirely clear that any of the contents relate to Guadalajara, though. The sketches appear to be done by a variety of artists, most accomplished and a few quite crude. Some are drawn directly on the pages, and others are mounted. They include domestic and historical scenes. One shows a mixed-race group drinking at a tavern. They are generally uncaptioned, although a few have Spanish words on verso such as Juanita or Canela. One page illustrates a few lines from "A la Una," the circa 1837 poem by Nicomedes-Pastor Díaz y Corbelle of Spain. 3 pages have printed French comic strip panels which appear to date from about the 1850s. The album cover appears to date from the mid-19th century.
