(MEXICO.) Tomasich, Antonio. Miniature portrait, possibly of Mexican historian and politician Lucas Alamán. Oil painting, 2 x 1 3/4 inches, in metal and glass pin-back case, with monogrammed initials apparently reading "LA" on verso. Np, 1853

Additional Details

The artist, Antonio Tomasich (1820-1890), was an accomplished Spanish miniaturist who was working in Mexico at this time. The subject resembles Lucas Alamán (1792-1853) an early Mexican Minister of Interior and Exterior Relations, a notable conservative historian, and the founder of the nation's natural history museum and national archives. This portrait, executed in the year of Alamán's death, appears to represent Alamán as a younger man. with--two other miniature portraits in frames: an unidentified young woman, by "M.K.," and an unidentified young man, unsigned.
