Zavala later became a founding father of the Republic of Texas, serving briefly as its vice president in 1836. All 5 of these decrees are grants of state citizenship to individual immigrants: Marco Bataní of Manila, the distinguished mining expert and botanist Cárlos Sartorius (1795-1872) of Germany, Gustavo Adolpho Stein and wife Maria of Germany, Santiago Smith Wilcoks (James Smith Wilcox) of the United States, and José Hernandez Chico.
