Additional Details

The life of a pioneering Sicilian Jesuit missionary and explorer Francisco María Piccolo, who helped established the Loreto mission in 1697--the first permanent European settlement in Baja California. He authored a pamphlet in 1701 which could be called the first Californian book, and mostly remained in the region until his death in 1729. Appended are shorter lives of Fathers Lorenzo Carranco and Nicolás de Tamarál, both killed in 1734 during an Indian uprising at the Baja Peninsula's southern tip. Cowan 1933, page 31; Hill 50; Howes B80 ("d"--very rare, obtainable only with great difficulty); Medina, México 4069; Palau 22766; Streeter sale IV:2432; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 124.
