Additional Details

This trade treaty amended the 1828 Treaty of Limits, the first between the two young nations, and was signed in Mexico on 5 April 1831. Perhaps the most notable article is XXXIII, pledging that both nations shall "maintain peace and harmony among the several Indian nations who inhabit the lands adjacent to . . . the boundaries of the two countries; and . . . restrain, by force, all hostilities and incursions on the part of the Indian nations living within their respective boundaries." The opening lines on the first page reflect the issuing office, "Primera Secretaria de Estado, Departmento del Esterior."
