(MEXICO--TREATIES.) The amendment to the Treaty of Limits between Mexico and the United States. 21 printed pages in parallel Spanish and English, signed in type by Francisco Fagoaga as Minister of External Relations. Folio, modern red calf gilt; moderate dampstaining and skilled early conservation to fore-edges of all leaves. Mexico, 1 December 1832
This trade treaty amended the 1828 Treaty of Limits, the first between the two young nations, and was signed in Mexico on 5 April 1831. Perhaps the most notable article is XXXIII, pledging that both nations shall "maintain peace and harmony among the several Indian nations who inhabit the lands adjacent to . . . the boundaries of the two countries; and . . . restrain, by force, all hostilities and incursions on the part of the Indian nations living within their respective boundaries." The opening lines on the first page reflect the issuing office, "Primera Secretaria de Estado, Departmento del Esterior."
