Daniel Lawrence (1793-1880) was a New Yorker who settled in Climax, MI just outside of what soon became Kalamazoo. He describes the trip west with his wife and children to Detroit by boat, and then by wagon west for another 130 miles: "about one third of the way was by marked trees." He also notes that "the Indians make a great deal of sugar and sell it to the white people. They are very friendly and come to swap with us frequently."
