Letter in support of Conant who resigned after the promotion of an officer with less experience. On the advice of his father, and after consideration from General Dana (Brigadier-General of the Volunteers), he retracted his resignation. Two weeks after this letter, the 25th, 29th, 31st, and 116th were positioned along the advance line of 17 Union regiments that moved from the West toward Appomatox Court House.
