Additional Details

The fortification of Charleston was key to the war in South Carolina. The labor force was for the most part made up of slaves impressed from the various plantations in the region. Following a great deal of concern about the use of Negro labor, General Beauregard appointed Edward Willis as a general overseer of the labor force.
