first and only edition. scarce, oclc locating no copies. Samuel M. Whitside (1839-1904) commanded the 10th Cavalry in Cuba. The 10th, made up for the most part of "Buffalo Soldiers" and black volunteers, distinguished itself during the Spanish-American War. Colonel Whitside had the unfortunate distinction of being the senior officer in charge of the 7th Cavalry at the massacre of Wounded Knee in October of 1890. He was later promoted to colonel in 1898, commanding at Santiago.
